Mercedes Schlapp has no easy job in her role in the role of White House adviser for strategic communication. She must contend with a president that acts as his own communications director as well as numerous legal fights which could disrupt the White House's strategy for messaging and a number of Cabinet secretaries ensnared in their own controversy. Schlapp has been keeping an eye on the target, and has been coordinating policy implementation together with White House staff from the department of legislative and political affairs and policy shop in addition to broader communication. To date, her focus is on issues like security in schools, the opioid epidemic, infrastructure, trade and other related topics. The position she holds, however, means that Schlapp has not been in touch with many journalists. She did draw a flurry of attention in March when she was mentioned as a possible replacement for Hope Hicks as communications director. It's been a nasty fight. Allies to Schlapp as well as Tony Sayegh who is another candidate for the position have been fighting over the media. Schlapp told that the Washington Examiner that she spoke to Sayegh to discuss a recent negative article about him.
